Canister Filter Making Noise

AnthonyC4C

  • #1
OK so I set up this canister filter...but I got a swishing noise and other random noises... I thought these things were suppose to be silent and I would have to check to see if it was even working... sadly I don't have that problem, I hear it just fine.... I tried tilting the thing back and forth hoping to bet whatever air out but...nodda...

Any pointers? I would like to live in this Silent Canister World BUT I need your help... everyone I know uses UGF's so I NEED your help please...

You might have a leak in your inlet plumbing sucking some air at a connection, or mabey your pick-up in the tank is letting air in???

I put on all the tubing and clips... I just don't know... I remember seeing a post about someone's canister with the same air swishing I am dealing with but can't find it... Hopefully tomorrow this can bve resolved with some help...

I think that person had a bubbler near the intake and that caused the swooshing sound. Was sucking in the bubbles.

A canister filter has to be "primed " IE filled completly with tank water
Most are self priming if the destruction manual is read correctly and all the tubes go to the right places there should be no prob
Is it sited about 4/6 inches from its top to the bottom of the tank ?

When I had air in the intake hose I got swooshy noises, I managed to get the air bubble out and it stopped..unless you got a lemon;(

Oh is that black sand I see?

Anthony, may I ask what bubblewand/light you are using there? I keep reading so so reviews on the ones I look at on Amazon.

Check the hoses for air. in any bends where it might be trapped or at the connections to the filter or to the intake/outlet

I have the same filter basically. With the exact problem. I believe there's a link to a video on getting the air out of the top as it doesn't prime all the way. Check page 2 or 3 of "Stocking 29g" itll be on my profile page somewhere. I Cant copy the link for Some reason. You basically turn the filter off and open of the blue latches until the water spills over the top a little. Open the latch VERY SLIGHTLY or you'll have water on your floor. Good luck. Let Me know how It goes!

No air or kinks in the hoses just air in the canister about 1/2 inch from the top...

The LED Bubble wand is Aqueon 21 inch

I will check out the video thanks O0

Yeah that air will burn your motor up too.

Well after a couple tries it worked.... let's hope it stays that way because I thought I had succeeded then the water still went down...

P.S. that video was entirely WAAAAYYYY to long to explain something that could of been accomplished in less than 60 seconds lol

BUT it helped!

Justus

Yeah its simple but otherwise its a great filter and runs beautifully.

Is yours silent or can you still hear it?

Justus

  • #21
I Can still hear it but its not loud at all. You can probably hear it hum.

AnthonyC4C

OK...so I had it filled, no kinks came home and water level has dropped almost an inch in the canister...

TGV

There has to be a leak on a seal somewhere???

Yeap... this is my luck...I have gone through 4 TV's in 4 years 3 - 60" and on my 1- 70" now... I honestly knew there would be something wrong because that's just the way my life works....

Justus

Sorry to hear /: If you bought it used there's like up to 6 O-rings that could need replacing.. I bought mine on craigslist used and got lucky. Just make sure all hoses are clamped securely. Did you buy it used?

Its alright, I bought it new off of Amazon... I had to buy another one but they are sending it 1 day and emailed me a return label.

You realize that because of the way your life works, the snow storm will cause a delay. BTW I think we are sharing a life!

When I hooked up my canister for the first time it did samething but after a couple of hours it calmed down and got really quite. I hope it gets better for you, but I think it's because it's a first time use thing.

Oh its quite worse than that because of my luck with buying things, there is actually something wrong... it has to be a bad seal within the canister though... all the connections are air tight and even with my canister primed and filled completely within about 5 hours I will have 1 inch of air on the top of the canister... and within a half inch of air (2.5 hours)... my inlet spews air bubbles...

Alright... the new one came in and after a couple of time to fill it air tight, we are good to go....

Air line for air pump in basement... my room you hear NOTHING, EXCEPT BUBBLES!!!!

WoW on Quiet/Silent... if it wasn't in my cabinet I would hear it a little bit...

No I still have a UGF in my 20g... BUT the thing(canister)is quiet BUT not Silent...

I can't hear my SunSun at all the only noise it makes is the ripples caused by the spray bar on top.

Same with my Fluval... the ripples on top are the only thing I hear.

Well... I am not happy about this...you would think this would be silent as well especially coming from API...

So you guys are telling me it just looks like a canister sitting there and absolutely no noise is coming from it?

My head has to be within 2 feet of it to hear it... maybe less. The only time I've ever heard it is when I'm on the floor reaching in to do something with it. I don't even hear it when I'm standing right on top of the tank putting in new plants or whatever.

Yes my sunsun is dead silent. The motor makes no noise that I can hear anyway.

oscarsbud

  • #41
My canisters are so quiet that I occasionally put my hand in front of the outtakes just to make sure they are running. The only noise I have is the hum from air pumps and the waterfall noise from the one HOB I use.

AnthonyC4C

  • #42
Well... mine is there is no doubt I hear it... its quiet and all BUT I hear it even with my cabinet door closed... hmmm maybe I will switch the tops to see if that helps

Or get a SunSun like everyone else (or Fluval!)

Because I was looking for actual flow rates... watts... and actual manufacturer... in which I still can't find the manufacterer website

jdhef

  • #47
I'm not sure if mine is silent because I don't think the TV has been turned off in the 5 years I've had the cannister. (and trust me, it's not because I watch TV...okay I vented, I feel much better now)

AnthonyC4C

LoL jdhef...that helped lol...

Actually... would I be better off with a spray bar with several different outlets rather than this nozzle in which my Angels are kinda trying to avoid where its coming out?

AND what about shortening a hose? Do you have to do it OR leaving it will be just fine?

CatfishJack

  • #50
Because I was looking for actual flow rates... watts... and actual manufacturer... in which I still can't find the manufacterer website

Fairly certain this is a situation where unnamed manufacturer makes canister filters for Eheim, SunSun, Jebao, etc etc etc

There is a good chance their website is a Chinese website and we can't find it due to language.

Is just like for years, if you bought a manufactured computer it was all foxconn or asus parts inside. Branded HP or Gateway or whatever on the out.
